After moving to Idaho I have been learning more on spinning. I have been able to teach the basics of spinning to people I meet at dances. I have also learned more about my self this blog is going to be changing direction from me talking about just spinning to me talking about life in general. I have moved across country, I have left a lot of things behind I have learned bout my self and will continue to do so. I am no longer that high school student that had no goals but a Graduate that is looking to expand her Knowledge. I am going to miss Michigan but I know that Idaho holds so much more possibilities.
I have not done the videos yet due to school work, Prom, and not having a good camera. However I was able to bring spinning to different people. I was able to teach people at prom the DJ even asked if she could try. I believe that this project was a success hope you enjoyed it as much as I have. I will be updating this blog thought the summer. If you have any suggestions, questions or want to know more please shoot me and email or comment below.
Went to the store a few weeks ago trying to find a nice purse to use as a poi bag. Found one and then got talking to the cashier while waiting for Mom to finish shopping. I mentioned how the purse was the perfect bag for poi. She asked what is poi and I took out the poi and started to spin. It was fully improve and a blast. Hope to be able to do more improve poi.
So today was the winter formal. It was so much fun! I brought my poi because my principal is awesome and said I could. I made sure I had both sets of LEDs. My first set was defective and so the company gave me a replacement pair.
What did you learn from perusing the Blogs of other students participating in Genius Hour?
I learned to make my project more personal. People are not reading a history book but your life and passion. So be passionate about it. How can you use what you have learned to impact your own Genius Hour project/ TedTalk? I can demonstrate my spinning as part of my TedTalk. I can also add video of me spinning. What progress do you still need to make towards your Genius Hour Project? I need to practice more and not let school get in the way of my passion. I hate Fall and Winter. Halloween through Christmas is when I think of family I have lost over the years. Sometimes it feels like the world is spinning so fast you just fall down and can never get your head above the debris. I feel like the girl in Kelly Clarkson's Breakaway.
This Christmas I plan to spin with love. I am working on collecting a few of my favorite fast pace songs that remind me that life is worth it and spin to them. I spin for my loved ones a father/uncle figure I lost this year, a best friend, a church teacher, and one uncle I lost in 2011 and one Aunt I lost in 2007. Some days it feels like I am cursed to live while others die. It that what it means to be human? Spinning is one way I deal with the stress of life. The faster the music the faster you spin and the more anger you get out. The slower the music the more controlled you have to be and the more you are able to think through what you are feeling. The history of poi is varied and diverse. The origins of the original dance comes from the Maori tribes of New Zealand. Poi is the Maori word for “ball on string”. They used poi to increase strength and flexibility in their warriors. Most tribes have their own reasons for making poi. Some tribes used it for hunting practice. Others used it for balance and agility training. Now Poi is a popular dance for Raves and Beach Parties.
What kinds of ideas about presentation skills did you think about as Sir Ken Robinson presented his ideas about education?
A talk is all about stage presents you can be casual and still profesional. How could you incorporate what you saw into your own ted talk? I can give a small intro performance and then share the history of the dance. I need to also think about what to where and the type of music I am going to use. How did Sir Ken Robinson's talk resonated with me? Sir Robinson talked about how schools no longer teach to the students needs but to the test. I have found this to be true in many of my classes. The arts and humanities are neglected and underfunded too. How might genius hour support Sir Ken Robinson's ideas about how to change education? Genius hour allows students to be creative and to learn about something that they care about. I have been told you can spin to anything. Some of my favorite styles of music to spin to are techno, metal, and dubstep. Some artist and songs I suggest are Basshunter, Van Canto's Wishmaster, and Michael Bradley's Look Up the Sky is Falling. If you have more control over your dancing you can spin to slower songs. A word of caution the slower the music the hard it is to spin. .
Useful Resources
The most useful resource I use for developing my genius hour is YouTube videos. The sheer number of people who create tutorials is overwhelming. I have found many that are useful and some that are not. These videos also give me ideas for costuming and practice clothing. I have also been looking at online poi shops and have found them useful for not only poi ideas but also clothing ideas. Did you know you can use neon or pastel checkered pj bottoms and a form fitting top to perform in? That was one tip I found on YouTube. Time Management I need to manage my time better. Genius hour is filled with research, but honestly what good does that do for my readers when I don't post links. Grr I must get better at that. I need to also make notes with links into a word document so that I can compile a few history facts and other neat stuff for future reference. I need to avoid getting distracted with random facts and trivia about poi and stop going off on tangents. All of this will come with time and planning. I need to take the time to plan what I want to post and start writing about the history of poi. |
